Working Internship Program Syllabus
By observing the ways and patterns found in nature, we can design systems that are inspired by and mimic natural systems thereby achieving not only sustainability but also abundance and plentitude. Permaculture and other models of sustainable living all involve a reunion with Mother Earth and her cyclical, super-efficient ways.
The course offers certification upon completion. We cover the ethics and principles of permaculture and several design methods such as zone & sector analysis, component analysis and more. Classes are devoted specifically to observation, soil, water, gardening, sustainable gardening & farming, composting, green & natural building, social permaculture, sustainable economics and urban sustainability. There are several design projects throughout the semester done individually or in small groups.
Getting to know the farm’s different ecological systems – compost toilets, biogas composting, grey water system, solar panels, and rain water collection. Understanding biological processes and physical reactions. Learning ways of designing and integrating ecosystems in private homes and farms.
Bio: Intensive Agriculture
Participants will discuss the different components of soil health and structure learn about plant and pest identification, and agricultural practices. Specifically, participants will learn about the principles of the Bio- Intensive farming focusing on companion planting and compost and prepare vegetable beds according to what is taught. All agricultural lessons are held in the fields through hands-on learning.
Getting to know Israel’s edible and herbal plants and their botanical families. Learning different herbalism concepts, producing products from plants in aromatherapy and natural cosmetics. Participants will forage/harvest for plants; learn the preservation and extraction process of their active ingredients, and prepare different cosmetics, health products and more.
A tour of the farm’s different ecological building practices, familiarity with construction methods and construction materials, understanding tool use and safety rules in construction areas. The practical part includes renovating existing structures or building a new one based on the methods taught.
Learn the basic concepts of mud building and ecological construction. Introduction to mud building and various construction methods (Cob, soil, straw, sand, plaster) and comparing them to structures in nature. Practical application of mud building skills around the farm.
Familiarity with multiple soil types and different transformations. Participants will experiment with sowing seeds, cutting plants, transplanting, and plant nursery care.
Participants will learn about seed pollination, plant genetics, and different types of seeds. Participants will also learn about bed and soil preparation, sowing seeds, transplanting and making seed balls. In addition, they will experience harvesting, seed saving, transplanting seedlings, and more.
